The Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc) in Industrial Relations & Personnel Management programme was approved by the Senate of the University of Benin in January, Upon successful resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in early 2014, the first set of students was admitted in the 2014/2015 academic session. Though the Department of Business Administration has always offered courses in human resource anagement/industrial relations since its inception, there was however a need for a separate programme to be fully devoted to developing the specialized manpower needed to manage people effectively in today’s organisations.
Thus, the Programme is committed to producing students with the relevant human resource orientation, attitudes, knowledge, and skills required for personal effectiveness and for bringing out the very best in the people of an organisation.

As a group of academics committed to producing students with the relevant human resource orientation, attitudes, knowledge, and skills required to drive
positive change and progress in Nigerian organisations in particular, and the world in general, we commit ourselves and our everyday actions and practices
to be guided by the following set of values:
a) Productive scholarship (We shall first and foremost be scholars in everything that we do; however our scholarship shall serve and promote the best human ideals in our African situation in general and in the Nigerian context in particular).
b) Team spirit and shared learning (We shall seek to support each other in whatever we do; we shall share information and knowledge and collaborate in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge).
c) Integrity (We shall keep our promises to ourselves, to our students, the university and the larger community; we shall conduct ourselves in ways that make us moral exemplars to those around us; we shall adhere to the ethics of our profession and participate actively in developing, propagating and advancing them).
d) Mutual respect (Scholarship requires that different points of view collide in order for the search for truth to prosper; in this regard, we shall respect different viewpoints, different backgrounds and other human differences as we seek to create the best form of academic practice in Africa).
e) Responsiveness (We shall be responsive to the needs of others in everything that we do: we will be responsive to the development needs of our country, continent and the world in our programmes; we shall also be responsive to the needs of our students, our faculty, the university, and the immediate community. f) Creativity and Innovativeness (We shall seek to be creative and innovative in our programmes and their delivery; we shall generate and seek fresh ideas in everything that we do in order to ensure not only the appropriateness and relevance of our programmes but also that we anticipate important future needs about which there may still be only scant awareness among our generation of scholars. We shall seek constantly to develop ourselves and advance our knowledge).

We shall give regular accounts of our activities to each other, our students and the larger community of interests that we have dedicated ourselves to serve).
The major objectives of the Programme are:
·To generate knowledge that adds value to the management of human
resource in work organisations and society as a whole.
·To produce adequate managerial manpower with the appropriate
knowledge, skills and attitudes to handle the growing and changing
human resource management responsibilities in organisations.
·To facilitate the creation of an entrepreneurial spirit in young men and
women who can help to exploit the available resources and
opportunities in their environment.
·To provide for the preparation of human resource management teachers
and researchers who can keep pace with the ever- rising demand for
human resources management education and advance the frontiers of
·To facilitate the education and training of managers in HRM at the
undergraduate, post-graduate, post experience and professional levels.
·To help produce teaching materials and literature more appropriate to
the Nigerian environment through research and cross – fertilization of
ideas in and outside the classroom.
·To raise the status of HRM theoreticians and practitioners through the
promotion of HR scholarship and practices that add value to people and
·To serve as bridge between HR scholars and HR practitioners.
A: Admission Requirements for the Four – Year Programme
(i) At least five credit passes in SSCE/NECO (or equivalent in
GCE O/L/WASC) or at least five merit passes in TC 2 which, in
all cases, should include English Language, Mathematics,
Economics and which must have been obtained in not more
than two sittings PLUS
(ii) The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination which must
be in Use of English, Mathematics, Economics or Business
Methods plus any other subject.
B: Admission Requirements for the Three – Year Programme
(i) Requirements in A (i) above PLUS
Two subjects at the GCE (A/L) or HSC one of which must be Economics,
Business Management or Mathematics.
In exceptional cases, the following qualifications may also be considered
(i) Requirements in A(i) plus
A complete pass in the intermediate examination of the Chartered Institute of
Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) or any other professional Human
Resource Management body.
(ii) Requirements in A(i) plus
The Ordinary National Diploma in Human Resource Management, Personnel
Management, and Business Administration, or any relevant subject (passed
with minimum average of upper credit) from a recognized Polytechnic or
College of Technology.
(iii) Requirements in A(i) plus
The Diploma in Human Resource Management, Personnel Management,
Business Administration, and any other relevant area with a minimum credit
pass from the University of Benin or any other recognized University.
(iv) A Higher National Diploma in any relevant discipline awarded
by a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
(v) A Bachelor’s Degree in any relevant discipline awarded by a
DEGREE PROGRAMME AND DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
The Department operates a 4 and 3 year programme which lead to the award of
Bachelor of Science honours degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel
